Epson Stylus NX215 Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer (C11CA47231) Ink Problems – Kenneth Alder –
The last time I bought an Epson printer, perhaps 10 years ago, I vowed to never buy one again- this as I was desperately trying to print out a text document for a class, but couldn’t do it because one of the color cartridges was empty; the inability to even get it to print using only the black cartridge, or “force” the printer to print if its computer says one of the four cartridges is empty since often the sensor says it’s empty before it is (I know Consumer Reports nailed them on not having as much usable ink in the cartridge as advertised), is just stupid- I pitched it and bought another brand, and let both the store and Epson know why I was switching brands. Despite this, I decided to give them another shot and bought this model when I wanted the convenienc of an all-in-one unit- big mistake, should have stuck with HP! Though the features are very nice, and the price was great, twice now I’ve found myself stuck, unable to print- though now because after replacing the black cartridge, the printer says it can’t “recognize” one of the half-full color cartridges. The first time it made me replace (waste) all 3 color cartridges before I could again print, as one after another it didn’t “recognize” them; what good is having 4 separate cartridges if I have to replace all 4 at the same time? I had to actually fight with the computer to even let me replace the black cartridge- it showed it as low but not empty, but it’s so stupidly programmed that unless the computer says it needs to be replaced, it won’t park the cartridge carrier where they’re accessible. If it does let me replace just the one (I now have to waste an hour making a special trip out) I’ll be left with differing color ink levels and the inability to just hit “print” on a large document and walk away with any confidence that there won’t be a problem with one of the other cartridges. As an added bonus- the individual cartridges are narrow, difficult to grasp individually when in the carrier side by side, fit tightly (finger is sore from scraping plastic ridges trying to pull them out)- anyone with normal-sized fingers and grasping issues would need someone to do it for them.
This is a good printer for the price. It’s easy to set up, replacement cartridges are reasonably priced, and it works well with Vista 64.
I do not like the printer window that pops up each time you send a print job to the printer, nor do I like the noise associated with printing. This was purchased as a replacement for an older HP printer that would not work with Vista 64. If I had known about the noise level of print jobs, I probably would have chosen another HP product instead of Epson.
